Officials have identified the man accused of fatally shooting conservative activist Charlie Kirk as Tyler Robinson, a 22-year-old from Utah.
Robinson was taken into custody on the morning of September 12 and named as the suspect in Kirk’s killing. Utah Governor Spencer Cox announced the arrest at a press conference, saying investigators pieced it together through surveillance video, interviews with Robinson’s family, and online messages exchanged with his roommate.
“We got him,” Cox said, appearing alongside FBI Director Kash Patel and other law enforcement officials. Court papers show Robinson will face charges of aggravated murder, felony discharge of a firearm causing serious injury, and obstruction of justice.
The shooting happened on September 10, 2025, while Kirk was speaking at Utah Valley University in Orem during a Turning Point USA event called The American Comeback Tour. As the political commentator addressed the crowd about mass shootings, a gunman opened fire, striking him in the neck.
Robinson’s parents are a law enforcement veteran and a care worker. Authorities said his family has played a role in helping investigators connect him to the attack.

Who Are Tyler Robinson’s Parents?
Tyler Robinson is the son of Matt (dad) and Amber Robinson (mom). His father has served for 27 years with the Washington County Sheriff’s Department in Utah, while his mother works with Intermountain Support Coordination Services, a state-contracted agency that helps people with disabilities receive care.
The family lives in Washington, Utah, in a six-bedroom home valued at around $600,000. Social media posts suggest a comfortable and close household, often showing vacations, family selfies, and celebrations such as Tyler’s college acceptance. Robinson is the oldest of three sons and grew up with two younger brothers.
His mom, Amber’s posts reveal snapshots of their family trips, including visits to the Grand Canyon and outdoor outings like fishing. In August 2020, Amber also shared her son’s ACT score of 34 out of 36, a result placing him among the top test-takers nationwide.
Tyler attended Pine View High School in St. George, graduating in 2021. He briefly enrolled at Utah State University the same year, studying on a scholarship for one semester before returning home. Neighbors noted that the shooter continued to live with his parents while attending college.
Public records show Robinson had no criminal history prior to the events that led to his arrest.
How Tyler Robinson’s Family Helped Investigators
A relative of Robinson told a family friend what Robinson had said about the shooting. That friend then contacted the Washington County Sheriff’s Office, passing along that Robinson had “confessed to them or implied that He committed the incident.”
Governor Spencer Cox said that the tip set the arrest in motion and that “his family and a friend helped to deliver him into the custody of law enforcement in Washington County.” He publicly thanked the relatives for “doing the right thing.”
In interviews, a family member told investigators Robinson had become more political in recent years. They also described a dinner before September 10, where Robinson mentioned that Charlie Kirk was coming to Utah Valley University. Family conversation turned to why they disliked Kirk and his views, and one relative said Kirk was “full of hate and spreading hate.”
Detectives then matched the family’s information with surveillance video, interviews with friends and relatives, and Robinson’s online activity, including messages sent on Discord.
Neighbors told reporters the Robinsons attend the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.
What Do Friends and Neighbors Say About Robinson?
People who have lived near the Robinson family for years shared their impressions after the shooting. One of them, Kristin Schwiermann, has lived just two doors away for more than 16 years and said the woman has known the family for decades.
Working as a head custodian for the Washington County School District, Kristin often saw the Robinsons at school activities and church gatherings and watched the boys grow up.
She remembered Tyler as a quiet teenager who kept a small circle of friends. She recalled that Robinson leaned more toward music.
Schwiermann described Amber Robinson, Tyler’s mother, as a kind and gentle woman. She said the incident left her feeling heartbroken for the family. Adding to her own shock, Schwiermann said her grandson had been in the audience at Kirk’s event. “My feeling was, at least it wasn’t a mass shooting,” Kristin noted. “The funny thing is my daughter is actually hosting an event for mental health. It just makes you think.”
Was Tyler Robinson Married?
Authorities have not confirmed whether Robinson was married, and no public information about his relationship status has surfaced. There are also no reports linking him to fatherhood.
At the time of his arrest, Robinson was living with his parents and siblings in the family’s home in Washington, Utah.
