As we all know, Jonathan Majors, the guy we all knew as Kang, isn’t going to be around in that role anymore. Marvel Studios decided to go in a different direction and brought none other than Robert Downey Jr., but this time he’s not playing Iron Man, he’s stepping in as Doctor Doom.
But this switcheroo has got everyone scratching their heads, wondering how Marvel plans to swap these big baddies without missing a beat. With all the multiverse madness that Kang was supposed to lead, inserting Doctor Doom into the chaos has fans both excited and a bit anxious to see what’s next.
Now, the question arises, how exactly is Marvel planning to shake things up?
The Original Plot for Kang
So according to a Marvel insider known as MyTimeToShineHello, the plot was all about Kang the Conqueror tearing through the multiverse, which sounds like a total disaster waiting to happen, right?
Marvel planned to introduce us to these so-called Anchor Beings, like all the different Spider-Men (Tobey, Andrew, Tom) plus some heavy hitters like Hugh Jackman’s Wolverine. They were supposed to team up to stop Kang from basically ending everything.
But here’s where it gets even juicier, the whole plan was for these Anchor Beings to actually fail at first, leading to an even bigger showdown in Avengers: Secret Wars. This narrative setup would have not only provided a rich playground for character development but also deepened the multiverse concept introduced in films like Deadpool and Wolverine, where the Anchor Beings were first mentioned.
However, the original leak suggested a totally different storyline.
Before this leak, a couple of years ago, it was reported that the MCU New Avengers were trying to take down Kang but were too green to handle the job. They couldn’t make sense of all the new artifacts like Ms. Marvel’s bands and Shang Chi’s rings, leading to their defeat.
This failure was supposed to lead to the creation of Battleworld and set the stage for Avengers: Secret Wars with a new Kang variant, The Beyonder, pulling the strings.
How Will Dr. Doom Replace Kang?
As we all know, after RDJ’s introduction at Comic-Con, Marvel Studios announced a significant shift for the upcoming Avengers film. Initially titled The Kang Dynasty, the movie is now Avengers: Doomsday, marking a major pivot from Kang the Conqueror to Doctor Doom as the central villain. This change is a big deal, hinting at a whole new direction for the MCU.
Here’s how Doom might just swoop in. With Kang out of the picture, the multiverse is in shambles, creating a perfect storm for Doom to step in. As the multiverse teeters on the brink of collapse due to Kang’s disrupted plans, Doom sees an opportunity to seize control. By manipulating the very fabric of the multiverse, Doom can consolidate power on an unprecedented scale.
Doctor Doom’s rise to power will likely make Latveria, his homeland, a central location in the MCU. This not only adds a new geopolitical element to the storyline but also provides a rich backdrop for his character development.
But that’s not all. The storyline is set up for Secret Wars, which is poised to follow the comic books’ epic scale. This event will be all about dealing with multiversal incursions.
Doomsday might end with Doom winning, leading to the creation of Battleworld, a patchwork planet made from the remains of destroyed universes, molded by Doom’s hand. This would be a perfect setup for a two-part “Secret Wars” saga, much like how “Infinity War” led into “Endgame.”
There’s an exciting way to bring Doctor Doom into the MCU while keeping Kang and his variants relevant. Instead of the Beyonders, from where Doom gets his reality-sharpening powers, Doom could steal his reality-warping powers and multiverse knowledge from Kang and his other selves.
This sets the stage for “Avengers: Secret Wars,” where we could see RDJ’s Doctor Doom fully realized as the God Emperor of Battleworld.
