Democratic state politician Melissa Hortman and her husband, Mark Hortman, were tragically killed in their home in Brooklyn Park, Minnesota, on June 14, 2025.
Authorities revealed that the shooter was 57-year-old Vance Luther Boelter, who had disguised himself as a police officer to carry out the attack. Minnesota Governor Tim Walz described the incident as a “politically motivated assassination” during a press conference.
In a separate but related attack, State Senator John Hoffman and his wife, Yvette, were both shot multiple times at their home. They both underwent surgery following the shooting. “We’re cautiously optimistic they will survive this assassination attempt,” Walz stated.
Following the devastating loss of Melissa and her husband, messages of sympathy have been shared from across the country, with many expressing heartbreak over the tragic events.
As people continue to mourn, many have grown curious about Hortman’s family background and her parents.
Her Parents Are High School Sweethearts
She was born to Linda and Harry Haluptzok, both lifelong residents of Minnesota. Linda, 76, and Harry, 77, still live in Andover.
The two have known each other since their teenage years, having met as high school sweethearts at Forest Lake State High School. Later, they both attended the University of Minnesota, where Harry studied business.
After college, they ended up working at the same company, John’s Auto Parts, where Harry has been the CEO since 1973, according to his LinkedIn profile. Earlier in his career, Harry also spent three years working for Ford Motor Company.
Inside Her Education and Early Life
Melissa, whose full name was Melissa Ann Haluptzok, graduated from Blaine High School in 1988 and went on to build an impressive academic resume.
In 1991, the lawmaker earned her bachelor’s degrees in political science and philosophy from Boston University, graduating magna cum laude. She later received her Juris Doctor from the University of Minnesota Law School in 1995, finishing cum laude. Years later, Melissa continued her education at the Harvard Kennedy School, earning a Master of Public Administration in 2018.
