Marilyn Lovell was the longtime wife of astronaut Jim Lovell, remembered for his leadership during the near-disastrous Apollo 13 mission and his record of four spaceflights — Gemini VII, Gemini XII, Apollo 8, and Apollo 13. She died two years before Jim, who passed away on August 7, 2025, in Lake Forest, Illinois, at the age of 97.
On August 8, the day after his death, the Lovell family shared a statement with NASA honoring “our beloved father, USN Captain James A. ‘Jim’ Lovell,” praising his groundbreaking career and remembering him as the leader of their family. They recalled his optimism, humor, and ability to make them believe they could achieve the impossible.
Apollo 13, launched on April 11, 1970, was meant to land on the moon, with Jim and Fred Haise as the designated moon walkers and Jack Swigert in orbit. Two days later, an oxygen tank exploded, forcing the crew to abort the landing and fight for survival in the lunar module Aquarius.
As the drama unfolded, Marilyn — then at home with their four children — faced the agonizing wait to learn if she would become a widow. Jim Lovell’s Wife, Marilyn Gerlach, Died at 93
Marilyn Lovell (aka Marilyn Gerlach) passed away on August 27, 2023, in Lake Forest, Illinois, at the age of 93 — the same month her husband, Jim, would pass away two years later. Her family said she died peacefully, surrounded by loved ones.
A memorial service took place on September 8 at the First Presbyterian Church of Lake Forest, followed by a private burial at the U.S. Naval Academy Cemetery.
Born on July 11, 1930, in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, Marilyn was the youngest of five children.
Jim and Marilyn Were High School Sweethearts
Jim met his future spouse, Marilyn, while they were both students at Juneau High School in Milwaukee. He shyly asked her to the prom, sparking a relationship that managed to thrive despite the limitations of the time. Women were not allowed on campus, and trips outside were restricted to just 45 minutes, yet the two stayed connected.
Marilyn later transferred from Wisconsin State Teachers College to George Washington University in Washington, D.C., so she could be closer to Jim while he attended the U.S. Naval Academy.
They Married in 1952
Marilyn and Jim were married on June 6, 1952, at St. Anne’s Episcopal Church in Annapolis, Maryland, just after Jim’s graduation from the U.S. Naval Academy. He often liked to say he had “married the prettiest girl from Wisconsin.”
Their marriage lasted more than 70 years, ending only with Marilyn’s passing in 2023. Throughout those decades, she embraced life as a dedicated naval officer’s wife and later became an active member of the original Astronaut Wives Club, supporting Jim’s NASA career and offering encouragement to other astronaut families.
The couple’s life together took them to many places, but Marilyn considered two cities home — Houston, Texas, where they lived for 20 years, and Lake Forest, Illinois, where they spent the last 40 years, and both eventually passed away.
A Lunar Tribute to Marilyn
One of Marilyn Lovell’s most unique legacies rests far beyond Earth — a triangular-shaped mountain on the moon named Mount Marilyn. Jim gave it the name while mapping potential landing sites during the historic Apollo 8 mission, seeing it as a symbol of the strength and steadiness Marilyn showed throughout her life.
The mountain sits along the edge of the Moon’s Sea of Tranquility, standing out as a prominent landmark.
Decades after Jim first called it Mount Marilyn, the International Astronomical Union officially recognized the name on July 26, 2017.
Marilyn Had Four Children
Over the course of their long marriage, Marilyn and Jim Lovell raised four children — sons James Lovell III (Darice) and Jeffrey Lovell (Annie), and daughters Barbara Harrison (Ken) and Susan Lovell.
Her family grew to include eleven grandchildren: Lauren Harrison (Matt Pataky), Scott Harrison (Katie), Caroline Harrison (Nick D’Addario), Emily Lovell, Katie Lovell, Thomas Lovell Williams, Jim Williams, John Williams (Mara), Allie Swanson (Brian), Marilyn Lovell, and James Lovell. She also welcomed seven great-grandchildren — Jackson Pataky, Nico Pataky, Parker Harrison, Bennett Harrison, Ellie Harrison, Fritz D’Addario, and Henry Swanson.
Family was at the center of Marilyn’s life. Known affectionately as “Grammie,” she was a devoted matriarch who cherished time with her “grands,” visiting often and showering them with attention.
