Who Is Shannon Sharpe’s Brother Sterling? NFL Career and Secret Wife

Table of Content Show

Sterling Sharpe is the older brother of Shannon Sharpe, the Hall of Fame tight end and ESPN analyst. Like his younger brother, Sterling also made his name in the NFL as a standout wide receiver for the Green Bay Packers.

The two brothers share an incredibly close bond. With their father absent for most of their childhood, Sterling stepped into a guiding role, often acting more like a father figure than just a sibling. Shannon has credited him as the biggest influence on both his life and career.

That bond was on full display in February 2025, when Sterling was officially selected for the Pro Football Hall of Fame. Shannon posted the moment on X, showing him tearfully sitting across from his brother and saying, “This is the proudest moment of my life, the absolute pinnacle.”

He captioned the video, “Every thing I’ve done has been influenced by you, Sterling Sharpe. I can truly say you’ve been a father figure to me. I’d have given my jacket long ago to place you in the Hall. Your hard work stood the test. Welcome to the Hall of Fame bro.”

Furthermore, Shannon has spoken about how much he looked up to his big brow growing up. On New Heights, he shared, “I went everywhere he went. I wore every number that he wore. I wanted to be just like my brother. My first college girlfriend even looked like his.”

So, what else is there to know about Sterling Sharpe—his career, personal life, and what he’s doing now?

They Were Raised by Their Grandparents

He was born in Chicago to Pete Sharpe and Mary Alice Dixon. Not long after, he and his younger brother Shannon, along with their sister Sherra, were brought to Glennville, Georgia, where they were raised by their grandparents.

At the time, their mother was struggling, and their grandmother, Mary Porter, stepped in to help. She had already raised nine children of her own, but when she heard her daughter needed support, she didn’t hesitate—she brought all three grandchildren into her small home with a tin roof just outside of town.

Life there wasn’t easy. The house was crowded, and money was tight. Sterling shared a bed with their grandfather, Barney, while Shannon slept alongside their grandmother. Despite the tough conditions, the home was full of love and structure—something both brothers often speak about with deep gratitude.

Sadly, both of their grandparents have since passed. Their grandfather, Barney, died of a heart attack in 1977. Their grandmother, Mary Porter, passed away in July 2011 at the age of 89, while in a nursing home in Glennville.

Sterling Left Football Due to a Neck Injury

Sharpe attended Glennville High School, where he played multiple positions—running back, quarterback, and linebacker. He also competed in basketball and track. He later became a standout wide receiver at the University of South Carolina, setting school records with 169 receptions, 2,497 receiving yards, and 17 career touchdowns.

His college achievements earned him induction into the College Football Hall of Fame in 2014.

Sharpe was drafted by the Green Bay Packers in 1988 and played for the team until 1994. During those seven seasons, he earned five Pro Bowl selections, three First-Team All-Pro honors, and led the NFL in receptions three times. In 1992, he achieved the triple crown, leading the league in catches, yards, and touchdowns.

But near the end of the 1994 season, a neck issue was discovered that required surgery. The injury ended his career earlier than expected.

After retiring, Sharpe went on to work as a football analyst, first for ESPN and later for the NFL Network.

Who Is Sterling Sharpe’s Wife?

Sharpe has been quietly married for several years, keeping his personal life away from the spotlight.

Although he hasn’t revealed his wife’s name or shared any public details about their wedding, he did mention her in a tweet on August 8, 2019. “My wife is going to kill me for this,” he joked, before making a playful bet involving the New York Knicks and free copies of NBA 2K20 for fans who retweeted him.

Today, he lives with his wife in Lexington County, South Carolina.

His Net Worth

Sterling has an estimated net worth of $2 million. In comparison, his younger brother Shannon has built a much larger fortune, with an estimated net worth of $30 million.

Over his 14-season NFL career, Shannon earned around $22.3 million in salary alone, with the rest coming from endorsements and media work.
