Jonathan Rinderknecht, a 29-year-old Florida man, has been identified as the suspect behind the massive Palisades Fire that tore through Los Angeles in January 2025. Authorities say the blaze, which began on New Year’s Day, claimed 12 lives, scorched more than 23,000 acres, and leveled thousands of homes and buildings.
Rinderknecht was taken into custody on October 7 near his residence in Melbourne, Florida. Federal prosecutors allege the young man deliberately set the fire that spiraled into one of the most devastating disasters in Los Angeles history.
Acting U.S. Attorney for the Central District of California Bill Essayli confirmed the arrest on X, writing, “Today we are announcing the arrest of 29-year-old Jonathan Rinderknecht on a criminal complaint charging him with maliciously starting what became the Palisades Fire in January.”
Essayli added, “The complaint alleges that Rinderknecht started a fire in Pacific Palisades on New Year’s Day — a blaze that eventually turned into one of the most destructive fires in Los Angeles history, causing death and widespread destruction.”
Rinderknecht is scheduled to appear in U.S. District Court in Orlando, where federal officials are expected to present further details about the case and the ongoing investigation.

Investigators say Jonathan Rinderknecht was working as an Uber driver on New Year’s Eve, just hours before the first flames were spotted in the Pacific Palisades area. Passengers from his final trips reportedly described him as tense and irritable that night.
According to the criminal complaint, Rinderknecht dropped off a passenger near Lachman Lane, then parked his car and walked alone toward a nearby hillside trail. Moments later, a small brush fire — later referred to as the Lachman Fire — was reported in that same area.
Though firefighters managed to put out the initial blaze before it caused visible damage, authorities believe the embers continued to burn unnoticed. By January 7, strong Santa Ana winds swept through the region, reigniting what remained of the fire. Within hours, it exploded into the Palisades Fire, spreading across Malibu and the Santa Monica Mountains and leaving behind catastrophic destruction.

At the time of his arrest, Rinderknecht was residing with relatives in Melbourne, Florida. Authorities confirmed that before relocating, the boy had been living in Southern California, not far from where the Palisades Fire began.
Investigators say Rinderknecht maintained connections in the Pacific Palisades area and had a friend who lived near the site where the blaze was first reported. After the fire, Jonathan left California for Florida and, according to prosecutors, later gave false statements during the investigation.
