Shane D. Tamura, a 27-year-old man from Las Vegas, has been identified as the gunman behind Monday evening’s (July 28, 2025) deadly shooting at 345 Park Avenue in Midtown Manhattan.
Just before 6:30 p.m., Tamura entered the 44-story skyscraper near 52nd Street between Lexington and Park Avenue, armed with a high-powered rifle and wearing body armor.
He opened fire inside the building—which houses the headquarters of the NFL, Blackstone, and KPMG—killing four people, including NYPD officer Didarul Islam, who was working private security. Islam, a father of two young boys, was expecting a third child with his wife.
Three more civilians were killed near the lobby, including a man and two women. One of the victims was later identified as Blackstone executive Wesley LePatner.
Tamura was also found dead from a self-inflicted gunshot wound on the 33rd floor.
New York Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch said, “According to our law enforcement partners in Las Vegas, Mr. Tamura has a documented mental health history. His motives are still under investigation.”
Originally from Nevada, Tamura held a valid concealed-carry permit for a handgun issued by the Las Vegas Police Department, which was set to expire in 2027.
The shooting stunned both New York and Nevada, leading many to look into Tamura’s upbringing, high school football days, and family background.
Shane Tamura Used to Play Football in High School
Tamura completed high school in the Los Angeles area, where the budding athlete built a reputation as a skilled running back.
He spent part of his high school career at Granada Hills Charter and also played for Golden Valley High School in Santa Clarita. A former classmate, Caleb Clarke, at Santa Clarita High School, remembered him as a “goofball” and said there were no signs of mental health concerns during their school years.
In an old interview with a local news outlet, Tamura spoke about his time on the field and was described as a standout player.

Another former teammate from Granada Hills, Anthony Michael Leon, said, “This is so shocking. I’m telling you, this was one of those kids who never exerted bad energy or a negative attitude.”
Leon added that Tamura was enrolled in the school’s virtual program and only came to campus a couple of times a week outside of football season. On the field, Tamura led mostly by example. “He was quiet, but when he did actually talk, people listened,” Leon said.
While some online speculation suggests Tamura may have once pursued an NFL career and grew resentful after falling short, authorities have not confirmed any such motive.
There’s also no clear record of what Shane had been doing in recent years, though some Reddit users claim the killer gunman worked as a security guard at the Horseshoe Casino on the Las Vegas Strip, a Caesars-owned property.
Who Are His Parents? His Family Life
Tamura was living with his parents in a quiet gated community in Las Vegas before the shooting.
Property records show the family purchased their three-bedroom, two-bathroom home in Desert Shores in January 2021 for $383,000—paid in full, with no mortgage, according to The New York Post.
The calm of the neighborhood was shaken following the incident, with police stationed outside the residence that Tamura shared with his parents.
While his parents’ names have not been officially confirmed, public records suggest family ties to individuals named Michelle and Terence Tamura. No additional details about his family life or upbringing have been released.
