Rudi Johnson, remembered as a powerful running back for the Cincinnati Bengals, has died at the age of 45.
His family confirmed the news to TMZ Sports, explaining that he passed away earlier this week.
At first, no official cause of death was given, though reports mentioned his struggles with mental health and the possible effects of CTE. It was later confirmed that Johnson died by suicide in Florida shortly after midnight on Tuesday.
Raised in Virginia, Johnson starred at Thomas Dale High School, showing talent on both offense and defense.
He later joined Auburn University and quickly became one of their standout players. In 2000, he was voted SEC Player of the Year after putting together ten separate games with over 100 rushing yards, setting a school record for a single season.
Johnson entered the NFL soon after and spent nine years in the league, eight of them in Cincinnati. His finest season came in 2004, when he broke the Bengals’ single-season rushing record and earned a spot in the Pro Bowl.
His career closed in 2008 following a brief stint with the Detroit Lions.
