A Trailblazing Figure in Nigerian Tourism Journalism
During the 1970s, O-T’s father rose to prominence as one of Nigeria’s earliest figures in tourism reporting, gaining recognition as a trailblazer in tourism journalism. As managing editor of TRAVELS, a magazine centered on business and travel, he helped change how Nigerians viewed the country’s tourism possibilities.
He expanded into publishing and media entrepreneurship in 1984 by founding Alfa Communications Limited, the company behind the influential Nigeria Banking Annual and the establishment of the Banker of the Year Award.
From 1989 to 1992 he was publisher of the London-based weekly Nigeria HomeNews, serving Nigerians living overseas. He also launched the Movement for Democracy & Human Rights in Nigeria; his activism under the General Abacha military government led to a period of solitary confinement in 1996.
He is also the founder of the Foundation for Values & Normative Change, an organization that promotes principles seen as vital to Nigeria’s development. His published books include Nigeria: This Is My Country, Damn It! (2000); Nigeria – A Thousand Laughs, A Thousand Cries (2010); and That’s Saying It The Way It Is (2017).
O-T says his father’s impact went well beyond professional accomplishments. Widely regarded as open-minded and intelligent, Tunde taught him to value kindness, fairness and a liberal outlook.
O-T recalled: “My dad also has a way of treating people with a sense of kindness, one of the things he told me there is no wisdom greater than kindness, that really influenced me. (sic)”
How His Father’s Network Launched His Stage Career
Fagbenle’s move into acting was heavily shaped by his father’s contacts, most notably a friend, Rufus Orisayomi. Orisayomi was the one who first introduced O-T to live theatre, casting him in a Nigerian production of Shakespeare’s Macbeth, an early turning point that fueled his love of performing.
After training at the prestigious Royal Academy of Dramatic Arts, he made his professional debut at the Royal Exchange Theatre in Les Blancs, quickly gaining attention for his stage presence.
He went on to deliver memorable performances in classic works such as Romeo and Juliet and in the musical Porgy and Bess, further establishing his theatrical reputation.
On screen, Fagbenle appeared in films including Breaking and Entering and I Could Never Be Your Woman, before joining the Marvel Cinematic Universe with Black Widow in 2021.

Born to Yoruba Nigerian and British parents, Fagbenle has spoken warmly about Nollywood and its impact. In a conversation with thenewsnigeria.com.ng, he highlighted the industry’s inventiveness.
He regularly contrasts the financing in different markets while praising Nigerian storytellers’ ingenuity. “In the U.S., a single episode can cost about $5 million. But in Nigeria, they produce amazing movies with far less—and that’s truly inspiring,” he explains.
Elements of Nigerian filmmaking have already influenced his TV series MAXXX, and O-T says he wants to broaden those creative ties with filmmakers back home.
On a personal level, he’s also reconnecting with his Yoruba heritage by trying to learn the language—an effort he admits is difficult. “I’m trying to learn Yoruba, but it’s tough. Every mispronunciation brings a laugh, which is a bit disheartening,” he shared in an interview.

Alongside O-T are his siblings Kunle, Banke, Luti, Dapo, Seyi, Torera, Tito, Pekun, Toto, Tani, and Temi, each of whom has made a mark in their respective professions.
The eldest sibling, Kunle, built a career as a lawyer working in both Nigeria and the United States before his death in 2018 at 49.
