A young Nepali student, Muna Pandey, 21, was tragically found dead in her apartment on West Airport Boulevard in Houston on Monday (Aug 26) evening. Muna, who was studying at Houston Community College, was discovered with a gunshot wound to her chest. The discovery came after an unknown caller alerted the apartment staff to the presence of a body in her room, prompting them to inform the police.
The Houston Police Department has launched a thorough investigation into the circumstances surrounding her death. As of now, no suspects have been identified, and the investigation is ongoing. The body has been sent for autopsy, with detectives actively piecing together the events leading up to the tragedy.
Muna’s friends have disclosed that her phone had been switched off for two days before the body was found, adding to the mystery surrounding her death. A potential lead in the investigation could come from a surveillance camera reportedly set up by Muna outside her door. It remains unclear why she had installed the camera, but authorities are examining any footage it may contain for clues.
She was Raised By a Single Mother
Muna’s story is not just about a young woman chasing her dreams in a foreign land; it is also a story of a mother’s relentless effort to provide for her child against all odds. Muna was raised by her single mother, Anita Pandey Adhikari, of Bhojpur, Nepal.
Anita, who previously ran a small digital shop, worked tirelessly to support her daughter’s education and eventual move to the United States in 2021 on an F-1 visa. According to her Facebook profile, Anita is employed at Nepal Life Insurance Company Limited.
Rejected by her husband early in their marriage and subjected to his abuse, she chose to raise Muna on her own. According to Anita, as her daughter grew older, she encouraged her mother to divorce her father, understanding the toll it was taking on their lives.
Since Muna’s death, Anita has made a heartfelt appeal to both the authorities and the Nepali community in the United States for support in seeking justice. In a recent video, she described the pain of losing her only child and demanded a thorough investigation to ensure the perpetrator is brought to justice.
A Life Full of Potential Cut Short
Muna’s friends and members of the Nepali community have expressed their grief and shock over her untimely death. They describe her as a bright, ambitious young woman who had a promising future ahead of her.
Muna had initially lived with a friend from Nepal before moving into her own apartment. Her life in Houston seemed to be on a positive track, even though there were signs of concern about her relationship with a white American man, which she had confided in her mother.
The Nepali Association of Houston, led by its Vice President Drona Gautam, has confirmed that Muna’s family in Nepal has been notified. The association is currently rallying community support to help Anita Adhikari through this difficult time.
