Kailani Merizalde Phillippe Knapp—better known as Kai—was born on July 1, 2011, in Los Angeles, California, USA. Born to actors Alexis Knapp and Ryan Phillippe, who ended their brief romance in 2010 shortly before her birth, Kai’s entry into the limelight seemed almost scripted by fate.
Ryan might not have publicly addressed the pregnancy initially, but the actor made sure to be in the delivery room.
Two and a half months later, Alexis was already back at work. She was on the set of Pitch Perfect, figuring out how to take care of a baby while filming long days. It wasn’t easy.
In April 2021, Alexis shared a throwback photo from those days on Instagram, revealing the challenging yet magical experience of balancing early motherhood with her career:
“no one understood how it was possible to breastfeed a newborn throughout the whole rehearsal and filming 14+ hour days for 3 magical months, but i told them “you’d be amazed at what you can do, when you have to….”
Now at 15, Kai is no stranger to the red carpet, having accompanied her mom to events like the premiere of Netflix’s Green Eggs and Ham in 2019 and the 2022 release event for Minions: The Rise of Gru.
In November 2023, Kai also celebrated Thanksgiving with her dad. Ryan shared a rare photo of his daughter on Instagram and wrote,
“Had the BEST Thanksgiving wknd w these lil beauties. Sawyer, Ever, Kai & Isla. Pizza was had, Elf was watched, Young Sheldon was binged(along w teen romance anime). Boba was had, boardwalk shopping, cooking of pancakes was attempted, and we found some fake snow.”
Kai Knapp also has two half-siblings, Ava Elizabeth Phillippe and Deacon Reese Phillippe, from her father’s marriage to ex-wife Reese Witherspoon.
