Jonathan Banks: Three-Decade Marriage to Gennera and Family Life

Table of Content Show

Jonathan Banks is best known for his steely portrayal of Mike Ehrmantraut on Breaking Bad, but offscreen he’s shown a much more tender, family-centered side — a devoted husband and father who contrasts sharply with his on-screen persona.

That gentler nature was apparent early in his life: at 21, he married Marnie Fausch in September 1968. The marriage had ended by 1970, and the reasons behind its dissolution remain somewhat unclear.

Marnie played a meaningful role beyond her time with Jonathan — she founded the Boca Beacon and left a lasting imprint on her community through journalism. She died at age 43 in 1991 in a car accident, and her influence continues through her daughter and the work she started.

Jonathan later married Gennera Gonzalez Cebian in December 1990. Their marriage has lasted for more than three decades and the couple share three children.

Jonathan Opens Up About Being “Stupid” in Love With His Wife

Often cast as a stern figure on screen, Jonathan lets a much softer side show when he’s with his wife, Gennera. At the 2023 SAG Awards, he introduced her to the Los Angeles Times. Asked what their ideal movie-night looks like, Gennera kept it short: “Popcorn.” Jonathan added with a grin, “And I usually fall asleep.”

The Breaking Bad star has never hidden his affection for Gennera, and he treasures the quieter moments they now get to share. Reflecting on their relationship, he said:

I love being at home. My wife and I for the first time are alone. I like my wife. I’m stupid in love with my wife and always have been. (sic)

His frank remarks and the small, candid scenes they display paint the picture of a lasting, deepening devotion that has only grown with time.

How Gennera Discovered Thanksgiving After Relocating to the U.S.

The Banks household becomes a festive crossroads each holiday season, mixing American rituals with Spanish custom. Gennera, born in Spain and a U.S. resident since the 1980s, has welcomed American traditions into the family routine.

Jonathan explains that when she first arrived she didn’t recognize Thanksgiving, but over the years she’s taken charge of the turkey stuffing and it’s become a highlight. On Christmas Eve they observe Spanish traditions, and he describes the meal as overflowing with food and splendor.

The house is full of warmth and laughter as family and friends gather, celebrating both Spanish and American customs together.

He adds that everyone comes home for the holidays — the children, their partners, and many others — so the house is busy with relatives at Christmas, which he loves.

From his perspective, their long marriage rests on deep mutual respect and genuine enjoyment of each other’s company — a sincere Hollywood romance away from the cameras.

Jonathan and Gennera Raised Twins and Welcomed a Stepdaughter

Jonathan Banks and his wife, Gennera Gonzalez Cebian, are proud parents of twins Claudio Banks and Becca Elena Banks — as noted by People. In addition to the twins, Jonathan has embraced Gennera’s daughter from a prior relationship, Ruth García González, as part of the family.

Becca has built a multi-faceted career in animation and cultural institutions: she works as a production coordinator at Walt Disney Animation Studios, handles PR and Marketing at the Smithsonian National Museum of American History, and serves as a Story & Script Coordinator at Pixar. Her résumé also includes past positions with Nickelodeon Animation.

Claudio is a member of the International Cinematographers Guild (IATSE Local 600), as shown on his public profile on Facebook.

Both Becca and Ruth are Indiana University graduates — the same alma mater Jonathan attended. All of Jonathan and Gennera’s children have married and gone on to start their own families.

From his earlier marriage, Jonathan is also the father of Joanna Banks-Morgan, who works as a filmmaker and photographer.

Jonathan’s gentle approach to parenting has helped knit the family together. Reflecting on fatherhood, he shared:

I’m a father of four and I would imagine at this stage there is a lot of instinct involved just from life lived that transfers itself. You know, you try to be kind. You try to be kind to a child. I don’t know that I really think about it too much.

Gennera is often described as the family’s guiding presence. Becca frequently posts affectionate tributes to her mother, celebrating the grace, passion and resilience Gennera has modeled for her children.

Beyond everyday parenting, Gennera’s influence shows in how her children carry themselves — confident, hopeful and grounded by the lessons of care and commitment she’s instilled.
