Joshua Ackles has long been fiercely fond of his younger brother, Jensen Ackles, 48, the actor best known for playing Dean Winchester on “Supernatural.” That protectiveness surfaced during a difficult moment while watching the episode “Swan Song” — the brutal scene in which Dean is attacked by Lucifer affected Joshua so strongly that he had to step out of the room. Jensen said, “All I saw was my little brother getting beat up. I had to walk it off because I was too upset.”
Their closeness shows up in small, thoughtful gestures too. One Christmas, Josh sent Jensen thermal handwear — a practical gift meant to combat the chilly Vancouver weather where much of “Supernatural” was shot and to keep him comfortable during long days on set.
These days, Joshua, 51, channels that caring nature into advocacy, focusing on raising awareness for Down Syndrome — a cause Jensen continues to stand behind and support.
Joshua Ackles and Ali Bitros Ackles: A Longstanding Partnership
Joshua Ackles has been married for many years to Ali Bitros Ackles, 53. Ali is originally from Garland, Texas, and works as an educational diagnostician. She also acts as an independent consultant for Rodan + Fields, the company known for its skin and hair care lines.
Ali attended the University of North Texas and completed her degree in 2016.
Three Kids — Their Youngest, Levi, Is Living with Down Syndrome
Joshua and Ali Ackles are the parents of three children. Their youngest son, Levi, was born with Down syndrome, and his arrival has motivated them to speak up and work on behalf of children with special needs.
Their middle child, Lincoln, has been diagnosed with ADHD. At home, his parents saw clear signs—yet for years his teachers described him as calm and easy to manage, creating a puzzling contrast between school and family life.
Those differences persisted until late in fourth grade, when educators finally began to notice behaviors consistent with ADHD. Lincoln went through an evaluation at Brain Balance and completed a customized program there, which led to marked improvement in his symptoms.
The family lives in Sachse, Texas.
The Ackles Family Behind the “Team Levi” Fundraiser
Joshua, together with his wife Ali and his brother Jensen, are active supporters of the Down Syndrome Guild of Dallas because Joshua’s son, Levi, is involved with the organization. To raise funds in Levi’s name they launched the fundraising page “Team Levi.” Their yearly targets have been ambitious, including $25,000 in 2015, $50,000 in 2016, and $20,000 in 2017.
Donors to Team Levi receive a thank-you card personally signed by Jensen Ackles along with a letter from Josh and Ali Ackles. Jensen has also honored his nephew on-screen, naming a gas station “Lil’ Levi” in an episode of Supernatural.
Similarly to Joshua, Jensen is married and a parent. With his wife Danneel Ackles he has three children: a son, Zeppelin, and two daughters, Justice and Arrow.
His Parents Were Married on August 21, 1971
Joshua is the son of Alan Ackles and Donna Joan Shaffer; the pair were married on August 21, 1971. Alan, born in October 1948, has acted in films and television, including credits on Devour (2005) and Supernatural (2005).
Josh has a sister, Mackenzie, who was born on June 26, 1985, and served as an extra in several episodes of Supernatural.
