Claudia Sheinbaum, the first female president of Mexico since 2024, has been married twice and is the mother of one daughter, Mariana Imaz Sheinbaum.
She is now married to Jesús María Tarriba, but the two first met decades earlier while in college and even dated for a short time. Soon after, Claudia met her first husband, Carlos Ímaz, and the pair quickly married.

What Does Claudia Sheinbaum’s Husband Jesús María Tarriba Do?
Tarriba is a physicist and a financial risk management expert.
He was born on September 1, 1962, in Mazatlán, Sinaloa. He attended the Faculty of Sciences of the National Autonomous University of Mexico (UNAM) and completed a bachelor’s degree in Physics in 1988 and a master’s degree in 1989. Later, Tarriba also earned a doctorate in Physical Sciences at the same university in 1994.
In 1993, Jesús served as technical director at the United Advisors Group (GAUSSC). He later worked as a quantitative analyst for Banamex from 1994 to 1997.
He has been a financial risk specialist at the Bank of Mexico since 2017.

In November 2023, the power couple married in a small civil ceremony held in Mexico City, surrounded by family and friends. Sheinbaum shared the news on Instagram with a photo of two wedding bands and the message, “I have news for you…”
Claudian met her future husband in the 1980s at the Faculty of Sciences at the National Autonomous University of Mexico, where they were both studying physics.
She was one year ahead of him, and the two dated for about a year and three months. During that time, Sheinbaum became active in the University Student Council (CEU), where she crossed paths with Carlos Ímaz Gispert, who would become her first husband in 1987.
More than three decades later, they found each other again. In 2016, while Sheinbaum was serving as head of the Tlalpan district, she noticed Tarriba among her Facebook contacts. Both were divorced by then, and Tarriba had just returned from Spain, where he had been living and working. They met again and picked up the relationship they had left behind as students.
Since then, Tarriba has stayed close to her but without seeking the spotlight. He was seen at her inauguration as head of government.
In September 2021, during a “Circular Dialogue” with residents of Mexico City and around her third state of the nation address, Sheinbaum spoke publicly about him for the first time, saying, “I’m in love.”

Who Is Her First Husband, Carlos Ímaz?
Before marrying Jesús María Tarriba, Sheinbaum was the wife of Carlos Ímaz, a politician, activist, and one of the founders of the Party of the Democratic Revolution.
They met through the University Student Council and began dating in 1986. The following year, they were married. In 1988, the couple welcomed their daughter, Mariana Imaz Sheinbaum.
Through the marriage, Sheinbaum also became stepmother to Rodrigo Imaz, Carlos Ímaz Gispert’s son from an earlier relationship. She has maintained a close bond with him over the years.
The marriage lasted for almost three decades before ending in divorce in 2016.
Their Daughter, Mariana Imaz Sheinbaum
Mariana was born and raised in Mexico City. She completed her undergraduate degree in History at the National Autonomous University of Mexico and later pursued a master’s in Comparative Literature at the University of Barcelona. She then earned a Ph.D. in Philosophy at the University of California, Santa Cruz.
Mariana is now the academic coordinator of humanities at UNAM-Boston. She has also worked as a research assistant and spent three years as an adjunct professor, teaching courses in History and Sociology.
Her work focuses on the philosophy of history, especially the ways literature and poetry influence historical writing.
