Charlie Kirk, co-founder of Turning Point USA and a leading voice for conservative students and voters, was killed on September 10, 2025, after being shot while addressing an audience at Utah Valley University in Orem, Utah. He was 31.
That same evening, a memorial service was quickly put together in Washington, D.C. St. Joseph’s Catholic Church, only a short walk from the U.S. Capitol, opened its doors for a prayer vigil organized by Senator Roger Marshall’s office.
At the church entrance, printed programs bore the words: “A SERVICE OF PRAYER FOR THE REPOSE OF THE SOUL OF CHARLIE KIRK.”
More than 150 mourners filled the pews, according to Marshall’s office. The crowd included many young attendees, still in their work clothes, who had come after invitations circulated on Capitol Hill. The service began at 7:12 p.m., and by then nearly every seat inside the church was taken.
Discussion about Kirk’s funeral has already drawn national attention. On GB News, broadcaster Bev Turner suggested the service might be delayed until after Donald Trump’s upcoming visit to King Charles in the UK. She noted that Kirk was seen as part of the wider Republican conservative family and that his funeral could resemble a state event.
Turner added that the Trump family is expected to attend, given that the former president was the first to announce Kirk’s death.
