Andrea Gibson, the bold, genre-defying poet who spent decades writing about love, identity, and injustice, passed away on July 14, 2025, at age 49. Known for tearing open the human experience with every line—grief, queerness, politics, and raw emotion—Gibson lived through poetry, and even more so, through love.
Their final years were chronicled in Come See Me in the Good Light, a documentary that feels like a farewell letter shared on their own terms.
The news of their death was shared by Megan Falley, Andrea’s wife and longtime partner in both love and poetry.

“Andrea Gibson was a winner today,” it continued. “On July 14th, at 4:16AM, Andrea died in their home surrounded by their wife, Meg, four ex-girlfriends, their mother and father, dozens of friends, and their three beloved dogs.”
Gibson had been diagnosed with terminal ovarian cancer in 2021 and spent the last four years facing it publicly, yet gracefully. They once said, “Whenever I leave this world, whether it’s sixty years from now, I wouldn’t want anyone to say I lost some battle. I’ll be a winner that day.”
Born and raised in Calais, Maine, they moved to Colorado in the late ’90s and found their footing in Boulder’s art scene. In 2023, they were named Colorado’s poet laureate.
Their published works—You Better Be Lightning, The Madness Vase, Take Me With You, and Lord of the Butterflies—earned a loyal following and became staples in spoken word and queer literature.
Following the news of their passing, Colorado Governor Jared Polis also released a statement honoring their legacy, calling Andrea “one of a kind” and praising their impact on arts education and community connection.
At the heart of it all was Megan. The age gap between them was real, but it never mattered. Their connection held firm, right through Andrea’s final day.

Who Is Their Wife, Megan Falley?
Falley is a queer femme writer known for her bold, unfiltered voice and years of work on the spoken word circuit. She’s spent much of her career touring full-time, building a reputation as both a poet and teacher who isn’t afraid to go deep.
Her titles include Drive Here and Devastate Me and the chapbook Bad Girls, Honey, which earned the 2015 Tired Hearts Prize. She’s also a National Poetry Slam finalist, with performances that blend emotional clarity and cutting precision.
Offstage, Megan runs the writing course Poems That Don’t Suck, guiding others to write with purpose and punch.
How Long Had They Been Together? They Got Engaged in 2022
Gibson and Falley began their relationship in 2014. There was a 13-year age gap between them, with Falley being younger, but it never came between them. Rather, Falley said of her partner to The Sunlight Press, “They are one of the most spiritual people I know.”
The engagement came eight years later, on Gibson’s 47th birthday in August 2022. Falley proposed, getting down on one knee—a moment Gibson later described as the most beautiful of their life.
“Yesterday was my birthday and this was beyond beyond beyond the most beautiful moment of my life so far,” they wrote. “Seven years of learning and growing together and this last year has gifted us both a hundred PHDs in the fiercest kind of love… I’ve not stopped crying happy tears. Love is magic.”
Though no wedding was ever formally announced, many believed they were already married by the time Gibson passed.
Did They Have Children?
No, they didn’t have children. But they shared their life with three dogs—Squash, Winnebago (Winnie), and Idgie.
All three showed up often on social media. Squash, a terrier, had been with them for over a decade. The others, Winnie and Idgie, completed the pack they treated them like family.

They Created Together, Too
Andrea and Megan shared a life filled with poetry, love, and creative work that came straight from the core. One of their joint works was the book How Poetry Can Change Your Heart—a short release about how words can shift perspectives and spark something real.
Their relationship also became the heart of Come See Me in the Good Light, a documentary that followed them through the most difficult chapter of their lives. Directed by Ryan White, the film earned the Festival Favorite Award at Sundance. During the premiere, Gibson shared that they hadn’t expected to live long enough to see it.
The film is set to stream on Apple TV+ later this year.
Her Family Background
Gibson was born on August 13, 1975, in Calais, Maine, to Shirley and Mark Gibson. They grew up in a Baptist household and attended local schools before enrolling at Saint Joseph’s College of Maine.
They also had a sister named Laura.
Family remained a strong presence in their life. Just a few months before their passing, in April, Andrea shared a photo with their parents on Instagram, writing, “Just had such a wonderful visit with my parents. I love these two so much. Look how cute we are. ❤️❤️❤️”
