All About Mel B’s Ex-Husbands—From First Jimmy Gulzar to Second Stephen Belafonte

Table of Content Show

Mel B has done it all—singer, dancer, actress, TV favorite—and with over 100 million records sold, she’s never been far from the spotlight. But while her career has soared across stages and screens, her love life has played out like a headline-worthy drama of its own.

Now, she’s a newlywed once again. On July 5, 2025, the Spice Girl walked down the aisle for the third time, marrying hairstylist Rory McPhee in a stunning ceremony at The Crypt in St Paul’s Cathedral, London.

The guest list included plenty of familiar faces, with Cara Delevingne, Katherine Ryan, and Daisy Lowe all turning up to celebrate. Her daughters, Phoenix, Angel Iris, and Madison, were by her side as bridesmaids.

Mel had known her third hubby, McPhee, for years through family circles, but it wasn’t until 2019 that sparks flew. He proposed during a romantic trip in 2022, and now, they’ve officially sealed the deal.

As fans celebrate her fresh start, many still wonder about the men who came before Rory—her first two husbands, and how those marriages ended.

Here’s a look back at both!

First Husband, Jimmy Gulzar

Mel B met Dutch dancer Jimmy Gulzar during the Spiceworld Tour in early 1998. He was hired as a backup dancer, but their relationship moved fast—just ten weeks after meeting, they were engaged.

On September 13 of that same year, they tied the knot in an over-the-top all-white wedding at a centuries-old church in Little Marlow, just outside London. It was the first Spice Girl wedding, with 150 guests in attendance. At the time, Mel even changed her name to Melanie G.

The two welcomed their daughter, Phoenix Chi Gulzar, on February 19, 1999. But the relationship didn’t hold. Mel filed for divorce in 2000, and by the end of the year, it was finalized. She was awarded full custody of Phoenix, while Jimmy walked away with a £1.25 million settlement.

Soon after, things took a turn. In 2001, Jimmy was accused of threatening Mel and assaulting her sister, Danielle. He was found guilty that August, though the conviction was later dismissed by the court.

After their divorce, Jimmy settled in North London and reportedly began receiving $7,100 a month in support. He was granted visitation rights with Phoenix, who continued to live with Mel.

Her Second Marriage to Stephen Belafonte Ended in Court Battles and Abuse Allegations

Mel B’s second marriage began in secret—and ended in chaos. She met film producer Stephen Belafonte while working on the movie Talk, and by February 2007, they were dating.

Just three months later, they got married in a surprise Las Vegas ceremony on June 6, 2007. A year later, they had a second wedding—this time with family and friends—on November 8, 2008, in Hurghada, Egypt.

They stayed together for a decade. On September 1, 2011, Mel gave birth to their daughter, Madison Brown Belafonte.

But the relationship wasn’t as stable as it looked. Mel filed for divorce on March 20, 2017, citing irreconcilable differences. She requested joint custody of Madison and asked the court to deny spousal support to Stephen.

Not long after, it got even more serious. The singer accused her ex-hubby, Stephen, of physical and sexual abuse throughout their 10-year marriage. She also claimed he controlled her through intimidation and fear. Though Stephen denied all allegations, Mel filed for a restraining order, which was temporarily granted by the court.

Eventually, the order was lifted, and Stephen was given access to Madison. Mel, however, was ordered to pay £270,000 in legal fees within 30 days, along with £3,800 in monthly child support.

Belafonte Was Also Married Before Meeting Mel

Before his marriage to the reality TV star, Belafonte had already taken a trip down the aisle. In 1997, he married Nancy Carmell, but the marriage barely got off the ground. Just two months later, she returned to her hometown of Honolulu and requested the marriage be annulled.

After that, Stephen entered a relationship with model Nicole Contreras. The two never married, but they welcomed a daughter, Giselle Belafonte, in 2004.

He’s a Film Producer and Entertainment Manager

Belafonte was born on May 18, 1975, in Hollywood and graduated from Loyola Marymount University. He launched his career by founding a production company called Remag, focusing on documentaries about rappers before moving into film and TV.

He’s best known for producing films like Thank You for Smoking (2005), The Crow: Wicked Prayer (2005) and and Bad Lieutenant: Port of Call New Orleans (2009).

He also owns Osiris Entertainment and currently manages artist Malu Trevejo.
