Hawaiian actor David Hekili Kenui Bell, known to many as Big Hawaiian Dude in Disney’s live-action remake of Lilo & Stitch, has passed away at 57. Along with his recent role in the movie, he had also appeared in popular TV shows like Magnum P.I. and Hawaii Five-0.
The news was first shared by his sister, Jalene Kanani Bell, in a Facebook post on June 15. Hawai’i police confirmed that David passed away on June 12. Although the exact cause of death hasn’t been released, officials told People, “No foul play is suspected.”
Jalene wrote, “It is with a heavy heart I share that my sweet, generous, talented, funny, brilliant and handsome little brother David H. K. Bell will spend today in the company of our Heavenly Father.” She explained that she had been waiting for the right moment to express her feelings, but a pre-scheduled Father’s Day message pushed her to share the news sooner than planned.
Just weeks before his death, David got to experience a special moment with his family at the premiere of Lilo & Stitch on May 23. Jalene shared how her brother organized the night. “He planned ahead and purchased the best seats in the house for us all to go together to opening night in Kapolei just two short weeks ago,” she wrote.
Jalene also spoke about their final evening together after the movie. “Our last time together after returning home from the movie was just sitting on my living room couch talking story about life, having a seltzer and doing a little genealogy. Blessed by this and all the big and small moments, I will keep our memories alive.”
While David enjoyed his time on screen, acting wasn’t his full-time career. He worked at Ellison Onizuka Kona International Airport at Keahole, first as an assistant airport superintendent and later as an AOC Supervisor.
Originally from Kaimuki, David had been living in Waimea, Hawaii, with his loved ones. He grew up alongside his two sisters in a close-knit home where Hawaiian traditions were always at the center.

David’s mother, Geraldine Kenui Bell, better known as Geri, has long been a proud voice for Hawaiian culture, always working to keep it alive for future generations of Kānaka Maoli (Native Hawaiians).

She began her career with the National Park Service as an information receptionist at Haleakala National Park on Maui. Over time, her dedication and hard work led her to make history as the first Native Hawaiian woman to serve as superintendent of a National Park Service unit, leading two parks in Hawai‘i.
In 1997, she moved to the Big Island with her husband Jimmy Bell and their three children, including David, after being appointed superintendent of Pu‘uhonua O Hōnaunau National Historic Park. Later, she continued her work at Kaloko-Honokōhau National Historic Park.
Now retired, Geri has stayed close to family. David often shared photos and moments with his mom on social media. Whether they were spending time with relatives or visiting places like Mauna, these gatherings remained a big part of their lives.
His Father, Jimmy, Was a Police Sergeant
David’s dad, James “Jimmy” Bell Jr., was a retired police sergeant with the Honolulu Police Department. Before joining the police force, he also served in the U.S. Army.

Sadly, Jimmy passed away on November 13, 2006, at the age of 66.
David Grew Up With Two Sisters
Lilo & Stitch star grew up alongside his two sisters, Jamie Bell-Kaaihue and Jalene Hitzeman. He shared a close bond with both of them and was always proud of everything they accomplished.
Jamie and Jalene also held a deep pride and love for their brother, supporting him through every chapter of his life. Even though David never married, his siblings gave him several nephews and nieces, who were a special part of his life.
