AJ Simon, born Amitral “AJ” Simon, was a 25-year-old former Albany defensive lineman and a prospect for the 2024 NFL Draft; reports list his net worth at $500,000 at the time of his death.
His university revealed the news on April 17, 2024, via their official X account. The announcement arrived roughly one week before the 2024 NFL Draft — a milestone Simon had been preparing for since December 2023. On his Instagram, he reflected, “Sad that it’s over, grateful it happened. #2024NFLDRAFT.”
The University of Albany issued a statement expressing profound sorrow, calling AJ both an outstanding teammate and a positive presence on and off the field who had been central to the program over the past two years and who will be deeply missed.
Greg Gattuso, Albany’s head coach, posted his own message on X,
Two joyous year coaching and becoming friends with AJ Simon. My prayers are dedicated to the Simon family. I love you AJ and will always have a special place in my heart for #8.
The specific cause of Simon’s death has not yet been disclosed.
From Local Standout to College Defensive Force
Simon grew up in Tobyhanna, Pennsylvania, and was a multi-sport athlete from a young age. He attended Pocono Mountain West High School, where he starred in both football and basketball. On the gridiron he wore No. 9 and lined up as a running back, defensive end and middle linebacker; on the hardwood he played forward wearing No. 21.
After graduating in 2017, AJ continued his football career at Bloomsburg University. At 6 feet 2 inches, he made an immediate contribution as a freshman, appearing in ten games and finishing the year with 20 tackles, 3.5 sacks, two quarterback hits and a pass breakup, with several games featuring a mix of solo and assisted stops.
His efforts were recognized in 2021 when he earned First Team All-Conference honors.
Soon after, AJ transferred to the University of Albany and continued to make plays on defense. In 2022 he took part in nine games; highlights included six tackles against Rhode Island, two sacks versus Baylor and an interception at Hampton, closing the season with 30 tackles and five sacks.
As a defensive lineman and an African-American athlete, AJ had his sights set on entering the 2024 NFL Draft.
