Malcolm-Jamal Warner found deep joy in being a husband and father, even if he chose to keep that part of his life away from the public eye. He had been married for years, but his wife’s name was still a mystery to the public.

On Monday, July 21, reports confirmed that Warner had died at the age of 54, reportedly while vacationing with his family in Costa Rica. The actor drowned on July 20.

Just two months earlier, he appeared on the Hot & Bothered podcast and spoke about the life he had built with his wife and young daughter. He shared that he once believed marriage and fatherhood weren’t meant for him, but later realized they brought him the most happiness.

Here’s a look at what we do know about Warner’s marriage, his bond with his daughter, and his dating history.

Malcolm-Jamal Warner’s Wife, Whom He Married in 2017

In May, during an appearance on the Hot & Bothered podcast, The Cosby Show star shared that he had married his wife in 2017.

Even early in the relationship, Warner sensed something lasting. He recalled thinking that even if they didn’t work out romantically, “she would still be the person that I would want to raise a child with.”

Looking back on their time together, he described a relationship that had never been clouded by drama or conflict. “We’ve been together almost 10 years and we have never had a fight, an argument, a raised voice or a harsh word said to one another… And it’s not like we agree on everything,” he said.

In June 2024, on his own podcast Not All Hood NAH, Warner also spoke about the happiness he found in marriage later in life. “There is a genuine joy and happiness in our marriages that I may not have necessarily had had I gotten married and started a family earlier.”

He added, “I know me at my level of maturation… there is almost a relief that I waited as long as I did to get married and start a family. So that’s a wonderful conversation to have amongst my comrades.”

He Met His Wife Through a Mutual Friend

In another podcast with Hot & Bothered with Melyssa Ford this past May, Warner shared how he met his better half through a mutual friend, at a time when he wasn’t actively dating.

“Because I was on this hiatus, I was like, I’m not really dating. Our mutual friend was like, ‘One date won’t hurt. She could be a really cool friend or really cool spiritual connect,” he recalled.

He was 45 at the time and had already come to terms with not having kids.

“I remember our first date,” he said. “I was like, ‘I’m at peace with not having kids. I’m probably not going to have kids.”

At that point in his life, he had been doing a lot of self-reflection. He started to think maybe the next chapter wasn’t about marriage or family, and he was okay with that.

“So our first date I was like, ‘Yeah, I’m probably not going to have kids,’” he continued. “And she said, ‘I’m definitely going to have kids.’”

He thought that difference would be the end of it. But as they spent more time together, things felt easy. There was no pressure.

“I didn’t have concerns about the way she might think about me because we were just hanging out,” he said.

His Dearest Daughter

Just five and a half months into the relationship, he asked his wife, “What do you think about starting a family?” That question led to a life he hadn’t planned—but one he grew to cherish.

Their daughter, now eight, became the center of everything. Over time, Warner said he came to understand what people meant when they said, “When you know, you know.” It was something he’d heard for years, but this was the first time it truly made sense.

He once shared a memory of watching The Cosby Show with his daughter when she was just four years old. To her surprise, the boy on screen was actually her dad. She instantly lit up and said, “That’s Papa!”

Warner said she was especially drawn to the character Rudy, so much so that for a while she called the show “Rudy’s Family.” He also shared that his daughter and his co-star Keshia Knight Pulliam’s daughter are close in age, just a couple of months apart, and close as friends too.

Looking back, he appreciated the thought behind The Cosby Show’s creative choices. Cosby had insisted the cast avoid current slang, choosing instead to invent terms that would keep the show from aging too quickly. Warner admitted that watching old episodes now with his daughter made him see how well that vision worked—the series still felt relevant.

He also mentioned that his life partner is Black and Puerto Rican.

Rare Instagram Posts About His Wife and Daughter

Warner didn’t often post about his family, but once in a while, he gave a small glimpse into life with them.

In September 2023, he shared a throwback clip on Instagram of himself holding his daughter and dancing to Lovely Day by Bill Withers—a song he used to sing to her when she was just one year old.

“We used to play it all the time when she was 1. Had to go back and find this post to show her,” he wrote.

The same month, he posted again, talking about how a weekend with his soulmate and daughter helped him through a rough stretch. On Labor Day, his daughter came up with the idea to wash their trucks together—something they hadn’t done since the 2020 lockdown.

“And yesterday, Labor Day, they had a surprise for me: washing our trucks, something we hadn’t done together since the 2020 Covid lockdown. It was my daughter’s idea,” he wrote.

Malcolm-Jamal Warner’s Past Girlfriends

Before settling down with his wife, Warner had a few notable relationships over the years:

1. Michelle Thomas
Warner dated Michelle Thomas, who played his on-screen girlfriend Justine Phillips on The Cosby Show, until 1994. Even after their breakup, they remained close.

When Thomas was diagnosed with stomach cancer, Warner stayed by her side until her passing in December 1998. Years later, in January 2015, he honored her memory in an Instagram tribute.

“If there was ever an angel who walked amongst us mere mortals, this woman was it,” the actor wrote. “So powerful even her haters would have to agree. She lit up the room like she lit up the screen! R.I.P. my love. We miss you.”

2. Karen Malina White
Malcolm Jamal was in a relationship with actress Karen Malina White for seven and a half years. On the Hot & Bothered podcast, he spoke about being in a long-term relationship—without naming her directly—and how it affected him afterward.

“After being in a relationship for six years, I spent the next two years like a man who had been in a relationship for six years,” he recalled. “I went on this hiatus. I was cold turkey.”

3. Regina King
From 2011 to 2013, Warner dated actress Regina King. The two were close friends before getting together. In a 2012 interview, King reflected on the timing of their romance, saying, “We both had to do whatever we had to do to be ready for each other now.”
