Bear Bachmeier grew up in a family where sports were part of everyday life. Both of his parents shared an interest in athletics, and most of his siblings took to football with the same drive.
He attended Murrieta Valley High School in California, where he played alongside his brother, Tigr. Bachmeier began his college career at Stanford in 2025 but later transferred to BYU, joining Tiger once again on the Cougars’ roster.

Who Are Bear Bachmeier’s Parents?
Bachmeier was born on June 15, 2002, in Murrieta, California, to April and Michael Bachmeier. Together they raised five children — four boys and one girl — in an environment where both discipline and adventure were part of daily life.

The Bachmeier home sat close to the wilderness, and the children often witnessed its raw side. “Growing up, we saw mountain lions and coyotes,” Bear recalled to the Los Angeles Times. “We saw deer being eaten by coyotes.” Experiences like that, he said, gave them the ability to adapt to whatever environment they found themselves in.
Life under April and Michael’s rules came with its own twists. None of the kids were permitted to get a driver’s license until 17 or 18, partly because of the steep, winding road into town and partly because their parents wanted to keep a close eye on them.
Some of the children spent their middle school years learning at home, roughly from fifth through eighth grade. Hank explained that homeschooling gave them extra time to train and condition, though their parents were equally firm about keeping them on track with academics.
Father Michael Bachmeier, a Marine
Bear’s dad, Michael, attended the U.S. Naval Academy, where he briefly played basketball before earning his commission as a Marine.
The Bachmeier family carried a long record of service. His grandfather fought in World War II at Midway, Wake Island, and Guadalcanal. His father became a Navy fighter pilot and tragically lost his life in a plane crash during a night mission.
Bear once reflected on that history. “It’s a long story,” he said after recalling the generations of service, before adding with a laugh, “Dad decided the best son with an animal name has got to be named Bear.”
Michael later pursued business opportunities in rental properties, real estate, and consulting for environmental companies. In 2019, his life changed when doctors found a brain tumor — an ordeal Hank called “a pretty serious deal.”
Mother April Is From Thailand
April Bachmeier was born in Thailand and came to the United States with her family at the age of five. She spent her childhood on the East Coast, where she also tried her hand at sports in high school. She often credits herself for passing down the athletic edge her children are known for.
Family meals carried the flavors of her heritage. Hank once recalled, “We ate Thai food, Asian food. I got to the point where I hated rice. We would just pound rice, chicken and steak, like, all the time. That is what we grew up on. We drank tons of milk, ate a lot of cereal and drank a lot of chocolate milk, whatever it might be.”
Bear Bachmeier Has Four Siblings
Bear grew up with four siblings — three brothers and one sister.
The oldest, Hank Bachmeier, was born on July 14, 1999, and pursued football at the highest level. A quarterback by trade, he played college football for Boise State, Louisiana Tech, and Wake Forest before moving into the professional ranks.
Hank once showed how much family meant to him when he wore a cap and gown at his high school signing ceremony. “I really just kind of wanted to wear this for my family just to show them that we’ve worked pretty hard and we’ve still got a lot to go,” he told the crowd. “It’s just kind of one chapter ending and kind of another one…and I can’t thank you guys enough for what you guys have done for me.”
Ella is the only daughter, and her brothers often point to her as the best athlete in the household. She excelled in track and field at the University of Redlands in Southern California and is now working toward an MBA at the same school.
Tiger, whose given name is James, also followed football while excelling in academics. After graduating from Stanford in just two and a half years with a degree in computer science, he chose to transfer to BYU alongside Bear following spring practices. He plans to return to Stanford for an advanced degree after his football career.
The youngest, Buck, rounds out the family as another quarterback. Still in high school, he plays left-handed and has earned the affectionate nickname “Cougar” from his father.
And Bear’s athletic ability was obvious from the start. At just two years old, he could dribble a basketball with the skill of a seasoned player, leaving people stunned. “People literally stopped and created space and watched and were like, ‘What the heck?’” his mother April remembered.
