Tommy Cash, the younger brother of the legendary late Johnny Cash, lived a full life, but sadly, he passed away on September 13, 2024, at the age of 84. His death was confirmed on Instagram and Facebook by The Johnny Cash Museum. Bill Miller, the founder and CEO of the museum, shared a personal message that underscored just how much Tommy meant to those around him:
Shannon and I lost a very, very dear friend last evening. I knew him for over 50 years. Tommy Cash was a loyal supporter of the Johnny Cash Museum and a very beloved member of our extended family as well as a highly respected member of the music industry.
He is survived by his loving wife, children, and other family members, including his grandchildren.
His Current Spouse Marcy was His Pillar
At the heart of Tommy’s personal life was his life partner, Marcy Benefield-Cash. The couple had been married since May 20, 2001, sharing over two decades of life together.
She was always by Tommy’s side, especially as he battled Parkinson’s disease in his later years. She was open with fans about Tommy’s health, addressing rumors with a heartfelt Facebook post, letting everyone know that despite his retirement due to the disease, he was “doing just fine” and sending his love to all his fans.
But her support doesn’t end there. So back in 2015, she started a business, working as an Independent Brand Consultant for R+F. This wasn’t just an entrepreneurial gig though, it was a ‘Plan B’ for her and Tommy, in case things did not go well financially in the future.
What started as her personal use of the products soon turned into an opportunity she couldn’t ignore. Within three months, she recognized the potential to share the benefits with friends and help others. In her words, she shared:

In everything that Marcy did, she had her husband in mind. This goes on to show the love and respect they had for each other.
He Had Two Kids With His First Wife Barbara
Cash was a father of two children, Mark and Paula, from his previous marriage to Barbara Wynn. Sadly, Paula passed away on August 29, 2019. She was a professional pilot and had an adventurous spirit. She spent 18 years with her partner, Tom Welch, who also passed away in 2021.
Mark, Tommy’s elder son, is married to Shelbi Lavender Cash. The two tied the knot on September 30, 2017, and share two daughters, Cara, and Courtney.
His Legacy of Resilience Lives on Through His Son Mark’s Music
After Tommy’s passing on September 13, Mark wasn’t sure he could go through with his scheduled performance the next day. However, with Marcy’s encouragement and reflecting on what his father would have wanted, Mark found the strength to carry on.
Tommy had always emphasized the importance of staying focused and having something meaningful to work toward. This mindset helped Mark move on and focus on what was important, enabling him to honor his father’s memory by taking the stage.
How Much Was His Wealth?
Tommy wasn’t just a country music star; he was a man of many talents. At the time of his passing, his total wealth was estimated to be around $2 million. His music career, which spanned over 50 years from the 1960s to 2016, gave him plenty of success with multiple albums and singles. One of his biggest hits, Six White Horses, continued to bring in royalties, decades after its release.
Although his career peaked in the ‘60s and ‘70s, Tommy stayed active in the industry for decades.
Outside of music, he had a second career as a licensed realtor in Tennessee. He worked as an agent with Crye-Leike Real Estate Services and even managed some notable properties, including his brother Johnny’s home, which undoubtedly provided a steady source of income.
