Meet James Carville’s Wife Mary Matalin and Their Kids Matty and Emerson

James Carville is a Democratic political consultant, while his wife, Mary Matalin, rose to fame as a Republican strategist before identifying as a Libertarian. Their marriage has long drawn attention for uniting two strong voices from opposite sides of the political aisle.

Even after more than thirty years together in the public eye, their home life tells a different story from the political spin they’re known for. Carville once said he enjoys nothing more than walking into a room with “the prettiest, smartest wife in town.” Matalin, when asked about her own feelings, stated: “What do I see in him? What do I love most? He loves us.”

Their disagreements on politics have never kept them apart. After more than three decades as husband and wife, they share a family with two daughters, Matty and Merson Carville, both of whom have gone on to live lives on their own terms.

When Did James Carville Meet His Wife, Mary Matalin?

Accounts differ slightly on when their paths first crossed, with some saying it was 1991. What is certain is that by 1992, they were both on opposite sides of one of the biggest political battles of the decade. Matalin was serving as deputy director for President George H.W. Bush’s reelection campaign, while Carville was a lead strategist for Bill Clinton.

Speculation about a romance followed them throughout that campaign. Even though they said it was on hold, the questions kept coming. During an August 1992 appearance on CNN’s Evans and Novak, Matalin was pressed on whether the relationship was genuine or just for show. She responded that the media didn’t know how to handle something so uncommon.

Their lives were even captured on screen in the 1993 documentary The War Room, which highlighted the intensity of that election season and the fact that they were working against each other. Away from the cameras, both have admitted that politics stays out of their household.

Despite the unusual circumstances, their story moved quickly. On Thanksgiving Day, November 25, 1993, they married in New Orleans. Carville went on to become one of the most visible voices for Democrats, while Matalin rose to the top ranks of the Republican Party.

Inside James Carville and Mary Matalin’s Unlikely Marriage

James and his wife, Mary, have often been called the odd couple of American politics — she, a lifelong Republican who later leaned Libertarian, and he, a Democrat best known for steering Bill Clinton’s 1992 campaign. Their marriage has lasted for decades despite those sharp political divides.

During an interview with Business Jet Traveler, Matalin was asked if Democrats and Republicans could take lessons from the way she and Carville handle disagreements at home. She smiled at the question before making her point clear. “We’re not a democracy. We pick our battles,” she said, explaining that compromise only works on issues that matter less, while the core values remain non-negotiable.

She added that politics cannot be compared to their relationship because, no matter the conflicts, “we’re never gonna not love each other, we’re never gonna get divorced, and we’re never gonna do anything that will jeopardize the happiness of our children.”

The interviewer followed up by asking whether she and her husband ever share the same views on national issues. Matalin acknowledged that they do, particularly on trade and certain economic growth policies.

Where they differ is in how to get there. Carville often looks to government as the answer, while she favors private partnerships and more decentralized solutions. She also noted that she is much less tolerant of what she considers regulatory excess than he is.

The couple has also worked together as authors. Along with Peter Knobler, they released All’s Fair: Love, War and Running for President, which became a bestseller.

In 2014, James and his better half, Mary, returned with Love & War: Twenty Years, Three Presidents, Two Daughters and One Louisiana Home. The book explores their family life, their time in Washington, and their eventual move to New Orleans.

She studied at the Academy of the Sacred Heart in New Orleans before enrolling at Hobart and William Smith Colleges. Today, she lives in Geneva, New York, with her husband, Sam Joel. The pair first crossed paths at New Orleans City Hall — her first day on the job happened to be his last. They reconnected later at a co-worker’s farewell party, and in May 2023, they were married.

Emerson, often called Emma, attended Episcopal High School in Alexandria, Virginia, before moving on to Louisiana State University, where she joined Kappa Delta. She also volunteered with Prevent Child Abuse Louisiana, worked with the Girl Scouts, and supported Companions of the Animals Alliance.
