Hugh Dancy first caught attention as an English actor in the television film adaptation of David Copperfield back in 2000. While he’s held his own in Hollywood with a string of standout roles, many also recognize him as the longtime husband of Emmy-winning actress Claire Danes.
His screen work has spanned war dramas, romances, and thrillers — from playing Kurt Schmid in Black Hawk Down (2001) and Prince Charmont in Ella Enchanted (2004) to taking on Joe Conner in Shooting Dogs (2005) and Grigg Harris in The Jane Austen Book Club (2007).
On television, he’s just as versatile, stepping into the chilling role of Will Graham in NBC’s Hannibal (2013–2015), then leading Hulu’s The Path (2016–2018). His performance as Robert Devereux in Elizabeth I (2005) even landed him an Emmy nomination. These days, viewers know him as Nolan Price, the sharp Senior Assistant District Attorney in NBC’s revival of Law & Order (2022–present).
But it isn’t just his work that keeps people talking. Dancy’s personal life drew headlines after he met Claire Danes in 2006, with romance quickly blossoming between them. The two tied the knot three years later and have built a family with three kids, making their marriage one of the more lasting love stories in Hollywood.
So how did it all begin, and what has life looked like since? Let’s take a closer look at Hugh and Claire’s story.
Claire Danes and Her Husband, Hugh Dancy, Have Been Married Since 2009
Claire and her spouse, Hugh, tied the knot in September 2009, choosing a private ceremony in France for their wedding. For the big day, Danes wore a gown designed by her close friend, Narciso Rodriguez.
The pair first crossed paths in 2006 on the set of Evening. On screen, they played two-thirds of a love triangle, but off-screen the connection soon became real.
At the time, Danes wasn’t rushing into a new relationship. She admitted later, “I was very recently single, and I had never been single before, so we were just friends for a while.” She recalled one moment in Rhode Island that stayed with her: “We met in Rhode Island when it was at its most audaciously beautiful, in the fall. And there was one day when we were bicycling by the water and it was sparkly and idyllic, and I just had this dumb epiphany, like, ‘I’m really just happy.’”
The romance grew quietly but with few surprises. Danes once told PORTER how an ornament-making party at Christmas showed her Dancy’s thoughtful side. He helped her organize the gathering and even brought along cowboy paper doll ornaments he made himself. “And I thought, ‘and he crafts?’ That was it. You have me for the rest of our lives,” she laughed.
In February 2009, after more than a year together, the couple got engaged.
Their Marriage Over the Years
Claire Danes and Hugh Dancy have both managed busy acting schedules, yet their marriage has remained steady through the demands of work and family life.
Speaking to The Evening Standard, Dancy admitted that balancing marriage and career has required compromise. “If Hannibal comes around again, [Claire’s and my] schedules would overlap by a couple of months,” he said. “Which would mean either I could be with her or she with me, or neither of us would be working, and there’d be a period where we’d have to commute.”
Claire Danes and Hugh Dancy Have Three Kids
Danes, along with her husband, Dancy, is the doting mother to three children: two sons, Cyrus and Rowan, and a daughter born in 2023.
Their first child, Cyrus Michael Christopher Dancy, arrived on December 17, 2012. Five years later, while speaking with Howard Stern in April 2018, Danes revealed she was expecting again. That summer, the couple welcomed their second son, Rowan, who was born in New York on August 27, 2018.
The family grew once more in July 2023 when Danes and Dancy welcomed a baby girl. A representative confirmed the news to PEOPLE on July 11, though the couple chose not to share her name publicly.
The family is now settled in New York City, where they moved after selling their longtime West Village townhouse in August 2024.
