David Payton‘s career from background extra to Marvel shows what persistent hustle can achieve in Hollywood. This Florida native started at the bottom and worked his way up, role by role. In 2014, he began as a crime scene onlooker in The Breaking Point, a thriller filmed in Florida. It was a small start, but it got him on set.
Determined to advance, he took on roles in short films. Each part, no matter how minor, was a chance to improve his skills and expand his professional network. His efforts began to pay off in 2019 when he secured a guest spot on Chicago P.D.
He made a major breakthrough in 2021 when he landed the role of Professor Herb in Marvel’s WandaVision. His involvement in the Marvel Cinematic Universe continues with Agatha All Along (2024), starring Miles Gutierrez-Riley and Brian Brightman.

Let’s take a closer look at some key facts about his life and career.
Raised By A Single Mother
Behind Payton’s Hollywood success stands a woman who played both mother and father – Wanda Payton. Their tight-knit relationship shines through in his public appreciation, especially on days typically reserved for dads. One Father’s Day 2014, he shared on Facebook:
I wanna take this opportunity to honor my father but give thanks to my mother for playing both roles so this Day you both share this holiday!
Wanda’s life as a parent has been far from straightforward, with her journey seeing its share of changes, including relationships before and after David’s birth in February 1983. Through it all, her support for him never wavered. She’s often the first to celebrate his acting milestones on social media.
While Payton’s biological father remains largely out of the picture, his family expanded over time. He formed a bond with his late stepfather, Wilfred Green, whose passing he has openly mourned. His family circle also includes stepbrothers Douglas Hurt and Sir John Green.
Played Football In High School
Before acting, David, 43, was making his mark on the football field at Dr. Phillips High School.
After graduation, however, his dreams of continuing his football career faced a harsh reality check. Despite his talent on the field, the tight financial situation at home meant pursuing a professional football career wasn’t feasible.
Joined The Military Following High School
With his football dreams sidelined by financial realities, Payton found himself at a crossroads after high school. Feeling directionless and faced with limited options, he made a decision that would shape his future: he enlisted in the military.
As he later reflected on the Geeky Misfit Podcast, joining the armed forces was essentially a default choice when he felt uncertain about his next steps, partly influenced by his background. Raised by a single mom who couldn’t afford luxuries like vacations, the military offered him some financial stability and a chance to see the world.
It was a practical choice that provided structure and opportunities he might not have had otherwise.
Left the Military To Pursue Acting
After his military service, Payton enrolled at Valencia College to formally study theater and acting. It was here that a reluctant David was persuaded by his theater director to join a production of The Duchess of Malfi. In an interview with Ronald Diltz II, he identified this moment as the turning point that ignited his passion for theater acting.
In addition to his acting pursuits, he has maintained a diverse portfolio of work. Before his acting career gained traction, he took on jobs like landscaping and washing cars. Even with his rising success, he still finds time for his car-washing side hustle.
