For over five years, he gave his all to the San Diego Police Department’s Northern Division. This wasn’t merely a career for him – it was a true calling. With the drive of an athlete and the patience of a mentor, he quickly became an invaluable asset in training new recruits.
He stood out on the force. His warm smile and unique personality brightened even the most challenging days. He was the kind of officer everyone hoped to work alongside, reliable and compassionate in equal measure.
Last year, he took on the role of field training officer to Zachary Martinez. Tragically, their partnership was cut short. Both officers were in the patrol car on that fateful night when everything changed in an instant.
His promising life ended far too soon while performing the duty he loved. As San Diego mourns this loss, it’s clear that Officer Machitar’s impact was significant. In his brief time with the department, he set a standard of excellence that will continue to inspire his fellow officers.

While He Remained Single, His Ex-Girlfriend Has Moved On
Austin’s Facebook posts from 2011 and 2012 offer glimpses into his past relationship. Photos from 2011 showed him hanging out with Ashleigh Padilla in group settings. By March 17, 2012, he made it official on Facebook.
However, not all love stories are meant to last. The couple eventually parted ways, and Ashleigh has since found new love with someone in the Navy. Despite their breakup, Austin and Ashleigh chose to remain connected, at least digitally, as Facebook friends.
As for Austin, his presence on social media has diminished since 2015, shrouding his recent romantic life in mystery. What remains clear is that when tragedy struck, he was unmarried.
He Was of Mixed-Ethnicity
Austin, the San Diego native grew up in Chula Vista, with law enforcement in his blood. His father, Christopher Machitar, a retired deputy Sheriff, laid the foundation for his future career.
Christopher’s surname points to Philippine roots, while Austin’s mother Leslie Redondo-Machitar‘s name hints at Spanish, Portuguese, and Galician heritage. Despite these far-flung origins, he was every bit the all-American officer.
After high school, he spread his wings beyond Southern California. He headed to the University of Hawaii, where he earned his bachelor’s degree in 2015. This island adventure surely added new flavors to his already rich cultural mix.
Back home, his sister, Asia Machitar, completes the Machitar family.
Now, in the wake of tragedy, the Machitars face an unthinkable loss. As they grieve, the community Austin served stands with them, remembering a man who bridged worlds both on and off duty.
