Jen Carfagno’s Husband Shares Her Passion for Weather Science

Like Jen, Neil McGillis has built an impressive career in the meteorology world. He currently serves as the Head of Global Weather Solutions at IBM’s The Weather Company and Watson Advertising.

In this role, he leads various cutting-edge projects related to weather forecasting, data analysis, and environmental monitoring—areas that continue to play a growing role in everything from business operations to personal safety.

Before joining IBM, Neil spent many years at The Weather Channel, where he worked as Director of Weather Systems Development & Operations. During his time there, he was deeply involved in developing some of the very systems and technologies that help meteorologists like Jen deliver timely and accurate forecasts.

His background in weather science runs deep, having earned a Master’s degree in Meteorology from Penn State University, the same institution where Jen studied.

Neil’s career has spanned more than two decades, during which he’s become a leading figure in applying advanced technology to weather prediction. From radar improvements to AI-powered forecasts, his work helps people better prepare for severe weather events.

A Family Bonded By Adventure and Sports

Though both Jen and Neil are dedicated to their careers, they make plenty of time for family adventures. Jen often shares snippets of their life on social media, showing a tight-knit family that loves being active and outdoors. Whether it’s skiing, cycling, surfing, or traveling, they seem to enjoy every opportunity to explore together.

One of the highlights came on Mother’s Day when Neil and the girls surprised Jen with tickets to watch their favorite soccer team, Atlanta United, play at Mercedes-Benz Stadium. She posted a picture from the day, writing: “Love my #mothersday gift! @atlutd tickets!! #vamosatl #atlutd.

Their shared love for sports doesn’t end with soccer. The family also makes yearly ski trips, fully embracing winter’s snow-filled playgrounds. These moments serve as little windows into how they balance their busy lives with quality family time.

Jen Often Credits Neil For Being a Wonderful Father

Even with her packed schedule, Jen regularly highlights Neil’s role as a father and how much he means to their family. On Father’s Day 2023, she posted a heartwarming photo alongside Neil and her own father, writing: “Happy Father’s Day to my husband and my dad! ❤️

Neil’s support has been constant throughout Jen’s demanding career, especially as she travels to cover major weather events or appears for long morning broadcasts. His steady presence at home has allowed their daughters, Natalie and Kelly, to grow up in a stable, loving environment where both parents support one another’s goals and schedules.

Jen’s Love for Weather Started Young

While today she’s known for standing in front of large digital maps explaining storm systems, Jen’s fascination with weather started way back during her childhood in Collegeville, Pennsylvania. She attended Perkiomen Valley High School, where she even served as a lifeguard. That job unexpectedly deepened her interest in meteorology.

Her passion was further fueled by growing up in Pennsylvania, a state known for its shifting and sometimes extreme weather. Experiencing major events like Hurricane Gloria and the Blizzard of 1993 only added to her interest. As a teenager, she would even wake up early to study the weather and call local radio stations with her own forecasts.

Jen originally dreamed of becoming a pilot, but as she grew more fascinated by weather forecasting, she switched gears and pursued a meteorology degree at Penn State University. While studying there, she was also part of the Chi Epsilon Pi honor society. After graduating in 1998, she joined The Weather Channel as an intern and never really left.
