James Van Der Beek was the eldest of three children born to Melinda and James William Van Der Beek. Raised in a close-knit family, the late actor grew up alongside two younger siblings, with both parents building respected careers of their own.

“He met his final days with courage, faith, and grace,” Kimberly wrote. “There is much to share regarding his wishes, love for humanity and the sacredness of time. Those days will come. For now we ask for peaceful privacy as we grieve our loving husband, father, son, brother, and friend.”
He is survived by Kimberly and their six children — Olivia, Joshua, Annabel, Emilia, Gwendolyn, and Jeremiah — along with his two siblings.

His mother, Melinda, died on July 7, 2020, at the age of 70. She was raised in Harrington Park, New Jersey, and later attended the Academy of Dramatic Arts in New York City after high school.
