The world of Jamal Adeen Thomas is anything but ordinary. Born on February 15, 1973, in New Haven, Connecticut, he arrived as the sole child of Kathy Ambush and Clarence Thomas, a figure you might recognize as a heavyweight in U.S. law—yes, a Supreme Court Justice.
After his parents split, Jamal, 53, lived with his dad, Clarence who wasn’t messing around when it came to education. He even sold his car to pay for his son’s tuition at Bishop Ireton High School.
Jamal’s admiration for his dad is clear, and he didn’t hold back in a Facebook post that summed up their bond perfectly:
Ahh the memories. When I went through my painful first haircut on my nappy head, Dad was there to hold my hand as I screamed in agony. When I played soccer and I would stare at the birds or anything else but the game, he was there to try to get me to pay attention. When I fouled out of about every basketball game I played, he was there to lift me up. When I played football, Dad was there for just about all my practices and games. When I foolishly attempted to wrestle my only match, Dad was there to laugh at me.
After the divorce, his mother, Kathy, remarried Douglas Allen Smith. But don’t get it twisted—she stayed tight with Jamal.
In 1987, things shifted again when Clarence married his second wife, Virginia Thomas, introducing another maternal figure to Jamal’s life. But instead of the usual stepfamily drama, this crew is getting along pretty well.
As for Jamal, he has certainly carved his own path to success. A graduate of Virginia Military Institute, he is now the Director of Supervision at Northwestern Mutual in Richmond, Virginia, where he leads and mentors a team of financial professionals. Beyond his current role, he has also held positions like Overlay Manager at Truist and Branch Compliance Specialist at Wells Fargo Advisors.
Join us as we explore more about Jamal who grew up in the shadow of greatness but found a way to shine on his own.
He Has Been Married Since 2006
Jamal found his heart’s match in Sakina Paige, and the couple tied the know on July 22, 2006, with a beautiful ceremony in Long Island. Their love story began back in the ’90s during Jamal’s first year at VMI when he was both nervous and mesmerized by Sakina’s beauty.
Now, more than three decades after they first met and nearly two decades into their marriage, their relationship has remained rock solid. The couple even embarked on a weight-loss journey together, proving they’re partners in every sense of the word.
In March 2013, Jamal shared an update on their progress, proudly announcing, “Sakina and I are dropping pounds.” He added, “I had a setback but no problem. Sakina lost 3 pounds this week. I lost net 8 pounds in the last 2 weeks. My workouts were noticeably better considering I am not eating like I was. The Bodykey shakes are really making a difference. Now we are mixing fruits in there. I’m snacking on veggies instead of potato chips.”
As for Sakina, she’s an impressive woman with an academic track record to match. She holds a master’s degree from the University of Virginia and earned her Juris Doctor from Washington and Lee University School of Law. She is currently the Director of Employee Relations at CoStar Group, following an 11-year tenure at Capital One.
He Believes In Active Parenting
Jamal is a proud father of a son and a daughter, and he’s deeply committed to being an active presence in their lives. From attending their activities to ensuring quality family time, Jamal makes it a priority to stay involved in their day-to-day experiences.
In 2024, Jamal took his commitment to fatherhood a step further by becoming the president of the board of directors at the Fatherhood Foundation of Virginia. This group is dedicated to assisting men to be better partners for their wives and kids. Under his leadership, the foundation promotes a shift towards deeper family intimacy.
He Participates In Charity Events
If you thought the Fatherhood Foundation was the only cause Jamal supports, you’re in for a surprise. His efforts stretch across various initiatives. He significantly contributed to the Brides Against Breast Cancer event at the Westin Hotel in Richmond, helping organize an event where brides could choose wedding dresses while supporting breast cancer research. Additionally, participants had the opportunity to win a membership at X-Team Fitness, combining wellness with charity.
He also gathered with Bishop Ireton High School alumni for a football game to support the Sean O’Malley Scholarship Fund, aiming to raise $1,000 for student scholarships.
His commitment to the community doesn’t stop there. Jamal supports the Virginia War Memorial. He frequently speaks about the personal sacrifices of veterans, particularly his late friend, Captain James Edge, a USMC officer honored in 2004. His discussions emphasize his respect for those who endure great personal costs for national security.
He Likes An Adrenaline Rush
Jamal isn’t just a dedicated father and community leader; he’s also a bona fide adrenaline junkie. His escapades started with marathons and half-marathons, where he pushed his limits running mile after mile, but that was just the warm-up.
The real thrill came when he took his adventurous spirit to new heights—literally—by scaling down a 20-plus-story building. This daring feat wasn’t a one-off event but a vivid display of Jamal’s love for heart-pounding, pulse-racing activities. Such bold adventures have given him stories to share and also inspired a sense of limitless potential in his personal and professional life.
