Ava is the daughter of Valerie Mackritis. From songwriting in childhood to runway walks and screen appearances, Ava’s youthful days, rich with artistic moments shared with her mother, built the base for her entertainment career.
Her artistic side blossomed early, thanks to her mom. Though only 15 when Ava was born, Valerie encouraged her daughter’s creativity from the beginning.
“My mom definitely gave me my foundation,” Ava told Them. “She taught me how to write my first song.”
Their music sessions began when Ava was just four or five. They’d create songs together, line by line, forming hooks and verses. For her, it was more than play – it became a way to express herself.
“I had so many emotions growing up that I couldn’t put into words,” Ava said. “She taught me to channel them into performance.”

These early creative times were crucial for the actress. “The arts definitely were my anchor — they saved my life,” she shared.
Her Transformation Has Its Unique Set of Challenges
Born a cis male, Alan Mackritis Miller, Ava began her transition somewhere around her early teens, knowing her birth gender and identity didn’t align with her true self.
Her story has one additional complexity, however. While many trans individuals cite transitioning as their primary challenge, Ava faced difficulties earlier. She was born from rape, a fact she’s confronted throughout her life.
She said, “Not every person of trans experience locates the root of their trauma at transition. For me, Ava Grey, my trauma started with being born of rape. We as trans people go through a lot, and sometimes it’s just because we’re here on earth.”
After everything was said and done, Alan became Ava Alex Dorian Grey, a name that matched her inner identity.
Valerie offered support, at such a crucial point in time for her daughter. Around the time, she became Ava, Valerie posted on Facebook:
“Hi Alan, Happy New Year! I would love you if you had only one strain of hair left on your head. You are beautiful to me. Mom Valerie”
This support proved crucial as Ava navigated her transition. In a Teen Vogue interview, she shared:
Being trans is just such a beautiful, large spectrum: I need people to understand, it doesn’t necessarily have to be the focus – and it also really isn’t after a while. It’s definitely not something I wake up and think about anymore.

She’s A Voice Of Hope For The LGBTQ+ community
Ava’s always been good at speaking up. From her high school days to now running a production company, her commitment to LGBTQ+ voices has stayed constant. Her reach has expanded from student groups to collaborating with diverse creators.
Around March 2012, she joined the West Potomac Gender And Sexuality Alliance. By August, Ava wasn’t just a member – she was running it. As the leader, she talked about sexual orientation and exploration, sharing what she knew and getting others to open up. Being a member of the community, she understood these topics well.
Ava is the founder of La Palindrome, a film and TV production company. Talking to Manrepeller, she explained the goals of the company: “Through my production company, La Palindrome, I want to tell the truth. I want to partner with women of color and women of trans experience. A lot of the time our stories get told but then we don’t get any of the benefits. We get opportunities, but our bills still won’t be paid. I want to make sure everyone who has a hand in the project gets paid.”
Ava isn’t just all about Acting
Since the past several years or so, Ava’s rise has been swift and impressive. She once used to spend her days helping kids with disabilities and pitching in as an assistant teacher. But bigger stages were calling.
New York City became her training ground as she honed her craft at the Susan Batson Studio. After sharpening her skills, she debuted in the 2018 Dance Musical drama, Pose.
Since then she has kept busy. You can catch her in Atlanta (2022) as Lorraine and in Run Sweetheart Run (2020) as Anita. But acting’s just one part of her repertoire.
She’s also made waves in fashion, walking the ramp for Nike, Adidas, and Willy Chavarria. Additionally, she has been featured on the glossy pages of Vogue, Playboy, and OUT Magazine.
Ava has also appeared in SZA’s Drew Barrymore music video. As evident in the video, she brings her unique flair, adding another credit to her growing list.

Her Relationship Status Is Anyone’s Guess
Ava is currently single, or at least we believe so going by her social media account. She has always been a relatively private person when it comes to this very topic.
The only time we ever saw her discussing her love was during an interview with Them, where she was discussing her character Lorraine.
When asked what was her first impression of Lorraine when she got the script, Ava said, “The first thing I noticed was the way her character has to call a man out. Thankfully, I was coming off an emotional situationship, [one in which I learned] to be more passionate in telling the truth to a man I loved.”
Ava shared that her personal relationship helped her understand and shape Lorraine’s dialogue in her portrayal.
