Anne Burrell’s Parents and Family: Her Mother Was Her First Culinary Influence

Table of Content Show

Anne Burrell, the bold, spiky-haired chef who lit up every kitchen she walked into, passed away on June 17, 2025, at the age of 55.

Before the cookbooks, competitions, and television fame, Anne’s love for food started with something simple—pasta. It wasn’t a fancy culinary school or a famous mentor that first sparked her passion. It was her mom, Marlene, who made the kitchen feel like a place worth being in. Anne often said her early love for cooking came from her mother’s side.

Her first restaurant job was at the old Daniel Webster’s in downtown Syracuse.

She eventually became a household name through her Food Network series Secrets of a Restaurant Chef, where she broke things down in a way that felt real.

Over the years, she became a regular on the screen. She competed on Iron Chef America and House of Knives, won Chopped All-Stars in 2015, and later judged on Chef Wanted.

Through it all, she never forgot where she came from. Anne spoke often and fondly about her parents and siblings.

Let’s talk about her family background in detail in the article below!

Anne Burrell’s Parents, Marlene and Steve Burrell

Burrell, known for her fearless cooking style and vibrant TV presence, was born to Marlene and Steve A. Burrell.

She grew up in upstate New York, where her connection to food started early. Some of her fondest memories came from spending time in the kitchen with her mother, Marlene, who she often described as a wonderful cook.

She also spoke lovingly about her grandmother, Nonnie, and the moments they shared preparing meals together.

Before she became a chef, Anne pursued a degree in English and communications at Canisius College in Buffalo. But food kept calling. She eventually went on to study at the Culinary Institute of America.

Meanwhile, her mom, Marlene, owned Flowers on Main, a local flower shop in Cazenovia. She stayed close to the community, running the kind of small business that gave the Burrell household a mix of creativity and discipline.

On the other hand, Anne’s father, Steve, had a different path. He worked as an engineer and later brought that experience into the classroom. Through his role with the Chris & Jim CIM program, he helped guide students in their Engineering Design and Development (EDD) class.

Burrell Grew Up With Two Siblings

Burrell wasn’t an only child—she grew up alongside her brother, Ben, and sister, Jane.

Jane is a registered dietitian with a strong background in clinical nutrition. She holds an M.S. in Clinical Nutrition from Finch University of Health Sciences/Chicago Medical School and has spent years working in both academic and clinical settings.

Before joining the faculty at Syracuse University, Jane worked as a clinical site coordinator at California State University of Los Angeles. There, she helped dietetics students gain hands-on experience by placing them in supervised practice rotations.
