Next, the promising actor will grace the screen in English Teacher, set to premiere on September 2, 2024. In this new series, Sergi will portray the character Markie alongside actors Brian Jordan Alvarez, Enrico Colantoni, and Savanna Gann.

Here are five captivating facts to help you get to know him better!

He Set Foot in Hollywood at 15

Born on February 29, 1992, in Illinois, Julian spent his high school years at Oak Park and River Forest High School. By the age of 15, he was already lighting up the stage at The Second City, a renowned improvisational hub. It was where he peaked his skills in creating funny, relatable, and often self-reflective content—a style that later became his trademark.

His breakthrough came with his role as Blake in the sketch comedy show Key and Peele, followed by a compelling appearance as Yuval in the critically acclaimed series Ramy.

He shows his love for performance and drive to connect with audiences through his natural flair in every role he takes on. In an interview with Starry Constellation Magazine, he mused on the nature of humor:

I  don’t know if anybody really learns to become funny I think you kind of have it or you don’t and then if you pursue it you either pursue it until you succeed or you just bail and both are great options.

His Father Wanted Him to Become a Lawyer

While Julian always felt drawn towards acting, his family initially had other expectations. His father, Vince Sergi, a retired chairperson of the prestigious Katten law firm in Chicago, had hoped Julian would follow in his legal footsteps.

During an interview with the Chicago Tribune, the comedian shared about his attempt to align with his father’s expectations. “I applied to Northwestern University, where my dad went to law school. He even vouched for me, but the university declined my application, saying, ‘This is really hard for us to say, due to your family ties, but no.'”

However, as his star began to rise in the entertainment world, his father’s stance softened. “My dad initially wanted me to pursue law, but he recognized my comedic talent, even joking that I was pretty clueless from a young age. Once I started to find success, he became one of my biggest supporters,” he recalled.

Similar to his successful father, his mother, Debbie Sergi, is also an accomplished author with two published books—Silk and Stitches and Plaza Lights. During the launch of her second book, Julian took to Instagram to sing her praises, calling her his best friend and biggest inspiration.

Julian is Vocal About His Mental Health

Talking about mental health should not be a taboo and this sentiment is something that Julian expresses clearly.

On October 1, 2019, he took to Instagram to reveal his lifelong struggles with anxiety and depression, aiming to diminish the stigma surrounding these issues. He advocates for seeking help and openly discusses his own path to managing his mental health, which includes years of therapy, medications, breathing techniques, and the invaluable support of his loved ones.

“I’m having a bout of depression and anxiety and I figured it would be important to talk about it. I’ve struggled with anxiety and depression for virtually all my life and it’s taken me a very long time to even grasp what they both mean,” he shared.

“I have been in therapy for 15 years. It’s crazy to me that a stigma is still attached to it. I have yet to meet someone who shouldn’t be in therapy. If you have good insurance or the means, please try it out.”

He affirms that with time and therapy, things usually work out to get out of the dark times.

He Keeps Fans Guessing with Playful Crush Confessions

When it comes to his love life, Sergi is all about keeping things under wraps. But don’t worry—he still gives us something to talk about! For now, it seems he’s perfectly content having a little fun with his playful confessions, rather than settling down with someone special.
